IBM i Application Development

Paragon develops, enhances, and supports custom and packaged applications on IBM i. Our capabilities include RPG, COBOL, PHP, Python, Java, CL, SQL, and the technologies needed to connect established IBM i applications with modern interfaces and other business systems.

Languages and Technologies for IBM i

We work with the technologies already in your environment and select the right language for the application, integration, and long-term support requirements.

RPG: All VersionsDevelopment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of RPG applications across the IBM i application lifecycle.
COBOLSupport and continued development for COBOL applications that remain important to daily operations.
PHPWeb applications, middleware, APIs, and integration components that work with IBM i data and business logic.
PythonApplication services, automation, data processing, and integration solutions running on or connecting with IBM i.
JavaEnterprise applications and services that use IBM i data and integrate with surrounding systems.
CL, SQL, and DB2 for iJob control, batch processing, database access, and the supporting components that complete an IBM i application.

Development That Fits the Application You Have

Our work ranges from building new applications and features to maintaining business systems developed over many years. We can add functionality, resolve defects, improve workflows, create reports, and modify custom or packaged applications to meet changing business requirements.

Many engagements begin with software we did not write and documentation that is incomplete or outdated. Our developers trace program flow, data usage, interfaces, and dependencies to understand how the application actually works before making a change.

We do not require a customer to modernize an entire application before we can support it. We can work within the current architecture or recommend targeted improvements when they provide a clear operational or business benefit.

Common Requests

  • New applications, programs, services, and business functions
  • Enhancements and modifications to custom or packaged applications
  • Troubleshooting and correction of unfamiliar or undocumented software
  • Web interfaces, APIs, and integration services
  • Reports, extracts, database changes, and process automation
  • Ongoing development capacity and application support

Support What Works and Improve What Needs to Change

Not every development request is a modernization project. We can make focused changes within the existing application, or help rearchitect applications when business requirements call for modern interfaces, APIs, database improvements, or a platform-independent solution. The approach is based on the customer’s objectives, not a predetermined technology choice. Learn more about IBM i modernization.

IBM i Development Questions

Can you work with software your team did not develop?

Yes. Supporting unfamiliar applications is a regular part of our work. We review the source, trace program and data dependencies, and determine how the application functions before implementing changes.

Do you support every version of RPG?

Yes. We support all versions of RPG and can maintain the application in its current form or recommend modernization where it provides a practical benefit.

Is your IBM i development limited to RPG and COBOL?

No. We also develop with PHP, Python, Java, CL, and SQL on IBM i, and we use these technologies to build web applications, APIs, automation, and integrations.

Do you build new applications or only maintain existing systems?

Both. We build new applications and features, maintain established systems, and provide ongoing development support when a customer needs additional capacity.

Do we have to modernize before you can support our application?

No. We support applications in their current form. Modernization can be addressed separately when it aligns with the customer’s business and technical objectives.
